　　用于表示類別：即用于某些形容詞或過去分詞前表示某一類人。如：

　　the rich 富人  the poor 窮人

　　the wealthy 富人  the old 老人

　　the aged 老人  the young 年輕人

　　the sick 病人   the brave 勇敢的人

　　the weak 弱者   the strong 強者

　　the dead 死者   the blind 盲人

　　the dumb 啞巴   the deaf 聾子

　　the wounded 傷員  the injured 傷員

　　the impossible 不可能的事  the unknown 未知世界

　　注：用于國籍名詞前表示某國的總稱也屬類似用法。如：

　　The English have a wonderful sense of humour.

　　英國人有很強的幽默感
